Public Interest Experience Grants provide stipends to Earle Mack School of Law students who are taking unpaid, summer public interest positions. These students are committed to the public interest and intend to pursue a public interest career after law school. The purpose of the grant is to offset the cost of living for students who incur significant financial burden by taking an unpaid position for the summer. It is our hope that students will gain invaluable experience, skills, contacts, and insight to further enable them to find employment after law school in the competitive practice of public interest law.
Both 1L and 2L students are eligible to apply. A brief information session will be held on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at 12:00pm in room 420.

Summer & Fall 2012 Co-op Preview Workshop

The co-op faculty are hosting a Brown Bag Co-op Preview Workshop for students interested in applying for a summer or fall co-op placement.
This summer, we are pleased to offer placements in all five categories, including law firms, in-house corporate legal departments, public interest organizations, judicial chambers and government agencies. Given this expansion to our summer program, we will have a lot of important programmatic information to share.
Students who wish to apply for a summer or fall co-op are required to attend the workshop. If you have an unavoidable conflict at the time of the workshop, please email Donna Duggan for a waiver, specifying the nature of the conflict (ie. scheduled law school class, illness...).

The Pennsylvania Innocence Project, The Pennsylvania Capital Representation Project, and Philadelphia Theatre Company have collaborated to offer a performance of The Scottsboro Boys + 2 CLE credit program + reception. The CLE program features an in-depth look at the Scottsboro Case, the politics of race and justice, and the blight of wrongful convictions with distinguished panelists including the Honorable Louis H. Pollak, whose dad argued the Scottsboro cases in the U.S. Supreme Court; Dan T. Carter, author of the definitive book on the Scottsboro Boys case, Scottsboro – A Tragedy of the American South; Professors Randall Kennedy and Marie Gottschalk, authors of landmark works on American criminal justice; three Philadelphia lawyers who have obtained the exoneration of inmates sentenced to death or life imprisonment; and a Pennsylvania exoneree.

Civic/Charitable Opportunity with United Way and Team NFL
USA TODAY Education is working with the United Way to promote their Team NFL program. The United Way has a goal of cutting in half the number of high school dropouts by 2018. To do so, they are partnering with NFL players (1 from each of the 32 franchises) to help them in the effort to recruit one million more volunteer readers, tutors and mentors by 2014. Each of the 32 players is being asked to recruit 1000 volunteers per year in their local communities for the next three years. TEAM NFL is being led by United Way Ambassador and Eagles player Nnamdi Asomugha.
One of USA TODAY’s student writers interviewed Nnamdi this weekend about his philanthropic efforts (as you will see in the link below). Because of our reach, we are helping the United Way to recruit civic-minded college and graduate students to be interns (otherwise known as “Player Promoters”) for TEAM NFL, who will be responsible for developing and executing social media strategies to support the NFL players and help them to reach their volunteer goals.

Justice McCaffery at Brandeis Society Law Networking Event
Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Seamus P. McCaffery will be the guest speaker when The Brandeis Law Society of Philadelphia and the Jewish Graduate Student Network of Hillel of Greater Philadelphia present their 11th Annual Law Networking Event on Tuesday, February 28 from 6:00-8:30 p.m. at the law firm of Duane Morris, LLP at 30 South 17th St. in Center City.
The event gives Jewish law students, lawyers and judges the opportunity to meet and chat with one another. It includes remarks from prominent professionals and breakout sessions focusing on specific practice areas as well as a general session, refreshments and socializing. It has proven to be beneficial to countless lawyers making their way in the Philadelphia legal community.
Justice Seamus P. McCaffery was born in Belfast, Ireland. He is based in Philadelphia, and was first elected to the bench of the Pennsylvania Superior Court in 2003. Four years later, in 2007, McCaffery was elected as an Associate Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Prior to that he served first as a Judge of the Philadelphia Municipal Court and then as the Court’s Administrative Judge. Justice McCaffery received his Juris Doctorate from the Temple University School of Law in 1989. He has the unique distinction of having served as not only a lawyer and judge, but also as a law enforcement officer.
The Brandeis Law Society welcomes all of its members as well as other lawyers to this free event and advance registration is not necessary. The participation of experienced lawyers and judges is vital to the success of the evening. Participants will have an opportunity to sign up to mentor individual law students if they choose.
