Accreditation Update
We have received our site report in connection with our application for full approval by the American Bar Association. The report extensively praises all aspects of our law school, and I want to thank everyone who helped make our application so strong. In particular, Professor Alex Geisinger and Leslie Friedman, Special Assistant to the Dean, took laboring oars in preparing the incredible volume of materials that we needed to file with the ABA. There are two further steps needed to complete the process: an appearance before the Accreditation Committee of the Section on Legal Education in April and a subsequent appearance before the Council of the Section in August. If all goes as expected, we will receive full accreditation in August.
We have also applied to become members of the Association of American Law Schools. Membership in the association would mark us as a law school that has a commitment to excellence in a variety of parameters, most importantly excellence in faculty scholarship. A team from the AALS will be visiting us from March 27-30, 2011. Stayed tuned for details on the visit.

Drexel Summer Theory Institute
Now in its second year, the Drexel Summer Theory Institute is a workshop for Drexel students with summer public interest law internships in the greater Philadelphia area. The Institute is modeled after a similar program established by two public interest lawyers, Nisha Agarwal and Jocelyn Simonson, for Harvard law students with public interest internships in New York City. Institute Fellows will meet with the co-conveners one evening each week to discuss works of social and critical theory as they relate to the Fellows' public interest work.
The Summer Theory Institute will involve a significant but not overwhelming commitment on the part of the Fellows. The Fellows will be required to attend all ten evening sessions, prepare for each meeting ahead of time, write short response papers to the readings, participate in the discussions, and lead one week's discussion. We may also arrange joint sessions or events towards the end of the summer in New York or Philadelphia with our counterparts from the Harvard Summer Theory Institute.
The mission of the Institute is to encourage thoughtful public interest practice by providing a space in which students can think critically about and reflect more deeply upon their everyday experiences practicing public interest law, using social theory as a lens through which to do so. Working together to think through the role that social theory can play in legal practice and activism allows the Fellows to engage more meaningfully with their institutions' methods of pursuing justice on a day-to-day basis. By creating the space to discuss larger theoretical concepts outside of the work environment, the Institute enhances the Fellows' senses of the potential for intellectual rigor and personal fulfillment in public interest work. The Institute also aims to foster a community of leaders who will bring their enthusiasm for pursuing social change through the law back to the Drexel community at the end of the summer.

Notices From The Student Bar Association Graduation Announcements Faculty Nominations
Dear 3Ls: As graduation approaches, as a class, there are some other details that must be decided. The next piece of graduation to vote on regards faculty nominations for specific roles at graduation. To make these decisions, the SBA has created another survey for our class. Voting will be purely write-in and must be completed by Today, March 7 at midnight, accessible at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LXFPQDG.
The faculty roles for graduation include: 1 faculty marshal, who leads the faculty into graduation 1 faculty mace bearer, who with the marshal, carries the ceremonial mace into graduation 1 faculty reader, who will call each graduating student's name as they walk the stage 2 faculty hooders, who will "hood" each student as they walk across the stage Dean Oates, as the Dean of Students, already has the role of marshalling the graduating class into graduation. Therefore, he cannot act as the faculty marshal or mace bearer. Any votes for him in either of these positions will be discarded. Similarly, Dean Dennis is not eligible to fulfill these roles as he has other responsibilities in the ceremony.
When voting, please nominate one faculty member to serve as marshal. The faculty member with the highest number of votes will serve as marshal, and the faculty member with the second highest number of votes will serve as mace bearer. In addition, the faculty reader will be the first faculty nomination confirmed, so that individual will not be able to act as a hooder in the event he/she receives a sufficient number of votes for both positions.
Please note that all faculty members have the right to decline these positions. In that event, the faculty member with the next highest number of votes will take the position. Finally, please also note that students MAY NOT act in these capacities, as these roles are reserved for faculty. Any student nominations will be discarded.
