Student, Faculty and Staff Volunteers Provide Service to Observe MLK Birthday
January 22, 2013 — Students, faculty and staff from the law school participated in service activities to honor the memory of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Many helped out with the Philadelphia Reads Book Bank drive at Martin Luther King High School in East Mount Airy Philadelphia on Jan. 21, the federal holiday which marks King's birthday.
The Philadelphia Reads Book Bank provides new and gently used books to teachers and children in public, private and charter schools in Philadelphia. According to the Book Bank, it has provided over a quarter of a million books to its constituencies since 2006.
Approximately 40 volunteer Earle Mack students, faculty and staff sorted through thousands of books to determine their eligibility for distribution to various schools. Volunteers also recorded hundreds of books on tape.
Members of the Jewish Law Students Association took part in a separate event, boxing and delivering canned food and toiletries for needy families in Philadelphia.
