November 7, 2011 — Professor Adam Benforado has a contract with Crown to publish “Unfair: How Our Hidden Minds Lead to Injustice.”
The book will explore unconscious biases, beliefs and behaviors that affect the criminal justice system and scrutinize the accuracy of assumptions about human behavior that underlie our laws and legal system.
“We have a lot of narratives about the sources of unfairness in our system: corrupt judges, racist cops, lying witnesses, but these stories are often inaccurate or fail to capture much of the injustice that is occurring,” Benforado said.
Research from psychology and neuroscience offer more complex and more accurate insights about what moves the legal system and how it could be improved, he said.
“This doesn’t mean the judicial system needs to crumble,” Benforado explained. “There are fixes that can be made – at a low cost.”
Benforado said he is writing for a wide audience, since many people have a keen interest in the criminal justice system.
