National Press Club Panel on Immigration Law Features Professor Anil Kalhan
November 22, 2010 — Professor Anil Kalhan took part in a panel discussion of Chamber of Commerce v. Whiting at the National Press Club on Nov. 22.
Sponsored by the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy, the panel focused on the case, slated to be argued before the U.S. Supreme Court on Dec. 8. The case represents a challenge to the Legal Arizona Workers Act, which imposes sanctions on employers who hire "unauthorized aliens."
Chamber of Commerce v. Whiting is a potential prelude to another case that may come before the Supreme Court involving Arizona’s recently enacted SB 1070, which criminalizes the failure of non-citizens to carry immigration documents.
The panel was moderated by Neil Kinkopf of Georgia State University and included Jennifer Chang Newell, staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union Immigrants’ Rights Project, David Rittgers, a legal policy analyst with the Cato Institute and Sri Srinivasan, a partner with O’Melveny & Myers.
