Intellectual Property Law Concentration Requirements
For students who wish to focus their studies in the area of intellectual property law, the Earle Mack
School of Law offers a sequenced curriculum leading to completion of the Concentration.
To complete the requirements of the Concentration a student must:
Complete the following Required Courses (generally during the second year):
Class of 2012 and Later
Fall Year 2
- Business Organizations
- Copyright
- Patents
Spring Year 2
- Transactional Lawyering
- Trademarks
Summer Year 2, Fall Year 3 or Spring Year 3
Complete a Practical Learning Experience (during the second or third year):
For the Class of 2012 and Later:
Completion of at least one of the below electives is encouraged, but NOT required:
- IP Practicum (if not used to fulfill the Practical Experience requirement)
- Law and Economics
- Antitrust
- Patent Prosecution
- Patent Litigation and Strategy
- Entertainment Law
- First Amendment
- Food and Drug Law
- Internet Law
- E-Commerce
- Licensing of Intellectual Property
- Other courses as approved by the Director
Writing Requirement:
Class of 2012 and Later:
The writing requirement FOR THE CONCENTRATION is eliminated. This does not affect any
other writing requirement that you might have.
No credits can be double counted for the purpose of fulfilling the practical and/or writing requirements,
thus, for example, a seminar paper used to fulfill the writing requirement cannot then be utilized
towards the course requirement.
The concentration requires an overall 2.5 minimum GPA. To receive "Honors" in the concentration, the student must have an overall GPA of 3.2 or better in the courses counted toward completion of the concentration.
